Most Distinguishing Trait: Blue Mash has been open for less than a week, but the course’s mature qualities make it feel as if it has a distinguished history. For those fortunate enough to have played some of Arthur Hill’s seminal courses in the area, including private clubs Bethesda and Lowes Island as well as public Waverly Woods, Blue Mash is more of the same. The signature rolling fairways, wide landing areas and tiered greens are all here, and they make Blue Mash a must-play for the serious golfer. But it’s not so frustrating that the weekend hacker can’t get around and have a good time doing it.

Toughest Hole: The front nine is considerably more difficult than the back, so it’s fitting No. 9 provides the layouts crowing test. The par 5 plays 522 yards from the blue tees and requires an accurate tee shot into a narrow landing area guarded by water on the left and high rough on the right. An errant second shot is liable to meet a sandy reception in one of the two bunkers along the right, but the green is inviting enough to tempt players to go for it in two. A fabulous risk-reward hole.

Best Chance for a birdie: The par-3 No. 6 is a welcome relief during a stretch of five holes that features the third and first handicaps. Playing 143 form the blue tees, the large sixth green has room for error. The only danger is a bunker shielding the short left side. Two larger bunkers line the right side and come into play only on severely wayward tee balls.

Rates: $45 Monday-Thursday, $58 Friday-Sunday and holidays.
